World Art - John Constable - his imagery is divine, but not of the religious kind

Signature tune

John Constable, (1776-1837) was an English painter, ranked with Turner as one of the greatest British landscape artists.

Before he left school he began painting his natural images of Suffolk. He was acclaimed by Delacroix and Bonington and he eventually influenced the Impressionists.

His landscapes were in the manner of Gainsborough but he developed his own style being influenced by Dutch painters. He became absorbed with changing light in the open air and atmospheric effects. He tuned into the aural influences of nature such as running water and visual images of willows, dams and brickwork and rotting wood and slime. He claimed these things made him a painter.

Suffolk and Hampshire were his favourite places.

The links provide just a few of his images.

Hi katyzzz
John Constable is indeed a great artist. 'The Hay Wain' is one of my favourites of his. Check out Caspar David Friederich's work too, particularly "Man and Woman Contemplating the Moon" Masterpieces!
Great work.

Ash,

Yes, thanks for that, it is pretty sensational, the dark of night and light of moon. It has a great atmosphere.

Edvard Munch is also a great painter if you like those sorts of works - 'The Scream' and "Starry Night" are two personal favourites. I love mood paintings, you can look at them and see such different pictures depending on how you are feeling.
Brings back my Uni days. Good stuff.

Thanks Ash,

Yes, I looked at the image you provided, I do like that sort of thing, in fact I like most things, probably too much.

I love Constable's work - went to an exhibition on him recently in Canberra.

This reminded me of my Mum's Wedgewood collection... only a different shade of blue...

Lilla,

I'm still crying, no hugs, I'm sorry, punishment seems so vile and extreme, but then again Wedgewood is rather expensive.

I'm sorry darling, I won't do it again, and I did it so carefully, too.
