DALLAS - Most of us dream of the day when we can quit our jobs and enjoy retirement, but not one North Texas woman.
Eunice Yancey celebrated her 100th birthday with co-workers and friends at Parkland Hospital, where she still shows up for duty daily. Yancey's 80-year old son drives her.
Seven years ago on her birthday, Yancey said she hoped to make it to 100, and she did.
"I don't look like 100?" Yancey asks with a laugh after she is told she looks great.
The hard worker received letters from dignitaries, including former President Jimmy Carter, and praise from those who know her best.
"Eunice is an individual that loved the employees," said Barbara Lloyd Watkins, a co-worker.
The 100-year-old's quick wit, warm heart and work ethic are well known at the hospital. Yancey never took a sick day in the 25 years she managed the Parkland Hospital gift shop. A stroke forced her to give up that job in 1994. Now, five days a week, the 100-year-old volunteers - bagging candy, answering phones or doing whatever is needed.
"I get here around 10 and I usually work eight to 10 hours," she said. "...I'm too old to get tired."
She said she is willing to work as long as Parkland will let her.
"Since they don't pay me, I don't think they will," she said of the possibility of ever getting fired.
