The Newest Addiction: Are You Already Hooked?

From: Real Age available free on the web

Think you’d die if you had to give up your cell phone? Answer these three questions:

1. Are you preoccupied with your cell?
2. Do you use it despite soaring bills?
3. Do you get irritable when you have to cut down on calls?

If you said yes, you -- along with countless other people -- may be addicted to your mobile.

In Britain, where cell phones outnumber people, researchers asked volunteers these and other questions and found that 17% had an unhealthy dependence on their cells. (And we thought Diet Dr. Pepper was bad!) More than a third said they were preoccupied with their phones and used them to lift their moods or avoid facing problems. A whopping 65% said they continued to use their mobile phones despite mounting bills. Don’t text your friend this tip yet!

In another study, the same researchers managed to pry the phones away from a group of frantic addicts. And do you know what happened? Not complete collapse, meltdowns, and isolation. Instead, the digitally deprived group actually felt less stressed, and their blood pressure stopped spiking as high when they talked about their phones.

Turn yours off and you might find that, gee, you have a pretty interesting life. Or that you can concentrate better. Or that not being constantly “on call” is relaxing. Even if you just spent a fortune on the latest and greatest iPhone, there’s an off button for a reason. Your body will thank you for using it. And really, that call can wait.

Thanks goodness my answer are three big "NO" for the above questions. However, if you changed the word, "cell" to "internet", then I might be totally addicted with it, Katyzzz!

Hey Katyzzz I answered no also, and even the land line phones I don't like, I am just not a phone person. Only use them when I have to. Cell phones are dangerous, and why is diet Dr. Pepper bad for you? I love the stuff.

Katyzzz,

I said no... well, first off, I don't have a cell phone. It's annoying but I like it at the same time-I want to be able to contact people from anywhere at any time in case of an emergency, but don't want them to be able to contact me just as easily. It's a toss up. End result: I'd like one, but I would give very few people the number.

Now, the internet. THAT is my addiction. Or just the computer in general, but mostly the internet. Can't... look... away...

(And diet Dr. Pepper is AWFUL-I love normal Dr. Pepper though)

Great to have your phone views Lester, it's the chemical they add that makes the 'diet' drinks bad for you, diet coke, too.

Mal - dave, it seems you dropped a d too, I always suspected you know, Norm and you had such a good thing going back in the olden days, thanks for pointing out my slothful ways. Definitely needed correction.

You're very clever, Norm, you seem to have found your niche, well ,as Norm, anyway.

Dianna, trouble is those cell phones are a two way street, I'll give you mine if you give me yours, so to speak. I don't have a cell phone, stay home all the time, so I'll be safe, it's less expensive.

I would have said your addiction way writing, but then again there is that internet thing, isn't there?

Great to have your views and news.

That's really bad for diabetics isn't, since we can't have the good stuff, because of our sugar levels. I however don't drink a lot of soda, spring water is my drink of choice. I know I have gone off topic here. But cell phones are bad for both diabetics, and none diabetics alike.
