This is one of *those* things, you know, 'those', what happens when someone gets too liberal, then stop thinking sense.
What they're protesting is to stop religious government, the government itself isn't religious but apparently (from what I understand) wanted to make allow religion, like a Christian cross as a piece of jewelry at a public school (which is apparently banned in Turkey). If you think it's just prejudice against Christians, well they've also apparently banned headscarf's from public schools, government buildings and other places too.
I think Turkey just wants to get into the EU, while many a liberal will hail modern turkey's founder, Ataturk, a hero, he's more of an asshole who at least in part destroyed a world super power.
Bleh, the whole thing is so confusing, I don't want to say something inaccurate so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks for all the information.
These things ARE very confusing. I really just wanted to draw attention to all the red flags and the fantastic views of the citizens carrying them.
I'm too ignorant of such things to be making any comments really, but that red mass was eye catching.
There were some brilliant shots on SBS to-night. The best place for international news.
