Does your child have ADHD? I often think it's a product of bad management.

ADHD kids transcendental meditation

But whether I am right or whether I am wrong, such kids and their parents do need some sympathy and a helping hand, in return they need to listen and learn.

Drugs are NOT a good option, are they? Parents do need to learn coping skills whatever the cause and it would be great to have a HAPPIER child, wouldn't it?

Although most forms of meditation could prove helpful, many are too difficult for the children as their concentration is so poor they cannot master the skills necessary to practice it.

But scientists are shedding some new light on the techniques of meditation and here is what they have come up with.

This is extracted from Los Angeles Times

A small pilot study published in the journal Current Issues in Education suggests that for children diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, the twice-daily practice of transcendental meditation in school improves attention and reduces stress, anxiety and impulsive behavior. And unlike other forms of meditation, which require levels of concentration that are difficult for most with ADHD, the students in the Washington, D.C.-area study were able to learn, master and practice transcendental meditation easily, said the study's lead author.

Given the ease with which the targeted students picked up and practiced TM, the authors suggested that such meditation could also be effective in helping students without ADHD better manage the stresses and anxieties of their school days, improving their functioning all around. Currently, slightly more than a dozen U.S. school systems have integrated the practice of TM into their school day, said Grosswald.

So it seems what started out as a nice little money generator at the time of the Beatles may well be a simple tool for assisting such children.

Hey Katyzzz I think it mostly is bad parenting skills. My nephew was put on medication for ADHD, it didn't help him any at all. But my brother, and sister inlaw should have been better parents instead of act like kids themselves.

Hi Katyzzz, I think only a very small percentage of children that are diagnosed really have ADHD. Most of the time it is just a case of badly behaved children through bad parenting. Parents let their kids run wild with no structure and no discipline and then drug them because they do what kids without rules of course will do, be naughty.

In true cases many of the symptoms can be alleviated by a change in diet. Because so many parents are time-poor and stressed due to work and mortgages they make poor food choices for meals. So much food now is processed and filled with God knows what and it, of course, is going to affect behaviour. It has already been proven that a preservative used in bread was a major cause and when parents switched to brands that did not have this ingredient their little angelic children returned to them.

I am not condemning parents for stressful lifestyles. Ecomonic problems create situations where parents are forced to work long hours and are understandably tired but it would only take 10 minutes more to prepare a nutritious meal with fresh food then it would to give them rubbish. Surely their health is worth that extra effort.

Sorry this is such a long comment. This is a bit of a bugbear with me as one of my siblings had all of his children on medication and it was simply a lack of good parenting causing the problems.

You are so right, Lester, and these things are very sad.

Cheryl, that's a wonderfully informative comment you have left and I know how time consuming these things are, You are very frank and I'm all for a bit of straight talking, I'm afraid parenting skills have been abandoned. Children are not toys, family is a serious business and sadly some won't recognize that at all. Let's hope your comments help some of those along the way.

Help is available but people need to hunt the right kind down, taking pills at such an early age can be disastrous.
