How to Find Dr. Right

finding the right doctor

One of the most important decisions you will ever make -- and you’ll probably make it more than once -- is choosing the right doctor.

YOU: the Smart Patient authors Mehmet Oz, MD, and Michael Roizen, MD, have a three-step approach to choosing wisely.

Take a survey. Ask your friends, your coworkers, and your neighbors who they like, and look for these names in the packet of options you get from your insurance provider.
Take it online. Make sure your doctor of choice is included in at least a couple of doctor databases from reputable medical association Web sites. Good places to start looking: the American Medical Association, the American Board of Medical Specialties, the National Committee for Quality Assurance Physician Recognition Program, the American College of Surgeons, and MedlinePlus. Share this handy health journal at your doctor visits.
Get on the horn. When you find a doc you like, call the office and ask key questions. At the very least, you want to find out that the doctor went to an accredited medical school and residency program and that he or she sees plenty of patients, has hospital privileges at a Joint Commission-accredited hospital, has been board certified for at least 3 years, and practices with other doctors who have equally strong credentials and training.

Hey Katyzzz I went without a family doctor for fifteen years, and almost died because of it. I finally got so sick with diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure I had to do something. I remembered a doctor when visiting my Aunt in the hospital, he was seeing a patient in the next bed.

I always thought if I get a family doctor I wanted him because, he took time to talk, and answer questions, well I did get him, and he help me a bunch. But sadly he went back to school to become a cancer doctor, and I was left with his replacement of which I like somewhat, but not like Dr. Jai.

With the VA, you get what they feel like giving, unless you're squeaky wheel; and I can be very squeaky as a wheel.

Katyzzz,

How timely, because when it comes to Queensland health system, you can forget all of the above if you are a medicare patient... simply print it out, screw it up and throw it in the bin.

I have been waiting five years to see a gatroenterologist and now I cannot even get my 17 years old daughter ~ with CP ~ to find one as she is no longer a child, but not an adult.. pass the buck, pass the phone call and welcome to another round in the press 1, 2 or 3 message madness.

The only way in is in an ambulance or through a 36 hour wait in outpatients. However, I am going to my local member on Monday as I cannot take anymore and ended up in tears in trying to get a specialists appintment for her CP even.

Enough is enough the health system has gone to hell ahead of us all, I fear. Certainly ahead of the politicians who continue to ignore how sick it is.

Lilla ..

Lilla, so well and profoundly expressed, you have my deepest sympathy both for yourself and your daughter. It is not so bad in NSW but the medical system is deeply distressed, and to think politicians in Queensland had the hide to say when the requirement to treat illegal immigrants emerged that no-one in Queensland would be disadvantaged for medical treatment, I am not saying they should not have been treated but Australians ARE being disadvantaged, and our doctors were put under enormous strain, many third world countries fare better.

I just wish I could say and do more, our medical system is impoverished.

What is happening to you is a national disgrace. Why did the Federal Government not give medical treatment its top priority when distributing its cash free for all largesse.

I'm sure those politicians do no waiting.

Katyzzz, I was wondering, "Is it any differences between the 'Mr.Right' and 'Dr. Right'?"'

Mr. Right means the man of a girl's dreams, Dr. Right means the rite doctor, rather than the witch doctor.
