SuperComputer - the Human Brain
April 8th 2007 08:47
"Computers that can carry out billions of calculations per second, space vehicles that rely on more than six million working parts, or cardiac pacemakers that keep ailing hearts beating are amazing human accomplishments. But they are no more than simple machines when compared with the machine that created them, the human brain.
Although we know a great deal about the anatomy of the brain, and have some insight into the chemical activity that makes it function, much of its workings remain a mystery. We may have determined that damage to specific parts of the brain results in memory loss, but we really don't know how memories are stored.
Neither can we explain how an Einstein can decipher the laws of nature while others, like myself, struggle to understand his theory of relativity. What makes one person dedicate himself to finding a cure for cancer while another picks up a rifle and goes on a random killing spree?"

The article continues drawing attention to such notables as Gall, Edison, Conan Doyle and Lavery, amongst others, and their remarkable achievements and clever minds.
