HUNTINGTON -- After 39 years, Nathaniel Osborne is trying to quit smoking
“It's the hardest thing I have ever done in my life,” Osborne said.
Like many others before him, it's not his first time. Janet Armstrong from Cabell Huntington Hospital said trying to quit is almost a habit of its own.
“Most people have to try 5-7 times before they actually quit smoking,” she said.
And with the start of a new year, she's seeing another rush to put down the cigarettes.
“Every time there is a New Year Resolution they do pretty good for the first month or two,” she said, “but then they have a tendency to lax off a bit and not do as well.”
Osborne said getting back into the habit is much easier than quitting.
“I tried the patches and when I wanted a cigarette I snatched that patch off and started smoking,” he said. “I've tried Welbutrin. I've tried promising myself, the New Year's resolutions. I've tried a lot of things, but for me the Chantix is the thing that works.”
Armstrong said different methods work for different people. Now there's something new, but it hasn't worked for everyone.
“There is of course the e-cigarette, or the electronic cigarette, that has been widely publicized last year and this year,” Armstrong said. “I have worked with some people who have done very well with it, and I have some people who don't seem to do well with it.”
With all health programs, it’s important to contact a doctor before starting any new medications.
