Memory Magic!
March 6th 2008 08:22
Struggling to remember?
What we eat can affect our concentration, memory and ability to solve problems. Always have breakfast to kickstart your brain after that overnight fast of 10-12 hours without food.
Drink enough. About 85 per cent of the brain is water, so even mild dehydration can cause lethargy and poor concentration, making even simple tasks seem harder.
Smart carbohydrates. Choose wholegrain cereals and breads, wholewheat pasta, brown rice, couscous, fruit and veg.
Smart Omega-3 fats, sardines, mackerel, salmon, fresh tuna and trout. Pregnant mums need guidance on sources of Omega-3 for them.
Iron, smart foods are red meat, oil-rich fish, eggs, green leafy veg, dried fruit, pulses, nuts, seeds and fortified breakfast cereals. The iron in meat is more easily absorbed and used by the body than the iron in plant foods.
Iodine-Smart foods Dairy products, eggs and seafood are good sources. Fruit, vegetables and cereals may contain variable amounts depending on the iodine levels in soil
B vitamins - from the four main food groups will help to provide sufficient B vitamins. Find thiamin in wholegrain cereals, fortified breakfast cereals, oats, brown rice, dairy products, pulses, nuts, seeds and red meat. Vitamin B6 is in fish, pork, eggs, brown rice, soya beans, oats, wholegrains, peanuts, walnuts, avocado and bananas. Good sources of folate include green leafy veg, peas, oranges, fortified breakfast cereals, nuts and pulses.
Pregnant women and women planning to conceive should also take a 400 microgram daily supplement of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects.
Choline - Smart foods Eggs, green leafy vegetables and pulses.
Antioxidants -Smart foods Tea, dark chocolate, red wine and most fruit and veg provide a variety of antioxidants.
Alcohol in excess is really BAD news for the brain and memory.

I hope, overall, that I'm increasing awareness, though, and all of our brains can do with effective re-boots, all the time.
Lovely to hear from you.

I have my doubts about drinking too much coffee but there doesn't seem to be warnings about, and do remember that food contains water too.
I don't know whether you consume anything which would be a natural diuretic depriving you of the benefits you are receiving in the fluids you ingest but try a little water consumption and see if this helps.
I suspect your diet is not what it should be, but I don't really know that.
Watch that salt consumption, is that a problem? Watch cheese, soya sauce, pre-prepared shop food, on the table, in the cooking, if it is you can progressively cut down and then you'll learn to enjoy the natural flavours of foods a lot more and will not want and in fact dislike salty things but watch sodium content in all the products you buy it can be huge.
Just guessing in your case, of course.
Let me know.

Hello Physio, I am aware of the diuretic effect of coffee and tea, but hadn't considered that they'd actually dehydrate me. I use a product called Emergen-C and I don't need to be active in sports-I am married to a live wire.
Thanks again Katyzzz, Raven

Try having 3/4 cup instead of 1, then 1/2 etc eventually selecting times when you most enjoy it, try to ascertain what drives you to it and see if you experience any benefits from cutting down and substituting plain water, juices, if you get to be truly de-hydrated then water is the way to go.
But beware the dragon (me) giving too much advice on too little information.
