Sleeping for the Brain and memory.

October 29th 2007 02:31
Sleeping brain memory
Signature Tune

Modern life makes the need to sleep difficult to fulfill.

This can result in reduced mental function, reaction time, increased irritability and metabolic changes which can mimic the effects of aging.

This can lead to driving accidents and injuries at work. Fatigue is the culprit.

Sleep is restorative, the body and mind repairs and does its housekeeping.

Sleep is adaptive, directly proportional to the day's productivity. Predators are not active at night and they need to sleep more, that's us, the predators.

But people vary greatly in their need for sleep.

Most people do not get enough, compensating on the weekend but this is harmful as it upsets your body clock.

Here's what you need to know.

1. Get an adequate amount of sleep every night.

2. Establish a regular sleep schedule.

3. Get continuous sleep.

4. Make up for lost sleep as soon as possible.

Effects of sleep deprivation

1. Missing out on sleep seriously impairs the body’s ability to process blood sugar, impeding the action of insulin such as in diabetes.

2. A midday nap helps your cope with irritation, frustration and declining mental performance

3. Sleeping for six hours a night may may seem enough but it is not enough for your immune system

4. The late stage of sleep can help with playing a sport, a musical instrument or any fine motor control.

5. Sleep strengthens learning and memory, allowing the brain to make new neural connections.

6. Sleep deprivation reduces your creative ability to cope with life.

So, for the sleep deprived, learn to sleep better and longer. You will be the beneficiary of the advantages.

Hi katyzzz

This is an interesting post, I knew a lot of these bits of info as I've had trouble with sleep for years now, but I didn't know this:

4. The late stage of sleep can help with playing a sport, a musical instrument or any fine motor control.

Wowee, that's interesting. It is amazing what a decent night's sleep does, it really does affect how you (well, I mean I) see the world and function.

6hrs sleep isn't enough for me and never has been. I need at least 7 and even then it has to be that REM decent sleep. It can be very frustrating.....

Tracy you probably need 9, women need one more hour per night than men.

Latest findings (trust me)

In previous times, before electricity etc Man went to bed when it was dark and got up at first light. True story, trust me again.

Hi katyzzz

You know I nearly said 9 hours but I got worried that people reading your blog might think I'm a lazy piglet. I really do need that amount and always have. Thank-you for verifying that, I really appreciate it.

I have anything but normal sleeping patterns. I work best at night so when I can, I do. This often means staying up for thirty plus hours... then sometimes sleeping for sixteen. It depends. I am very nocturnal, even if I get nine hours sleep and get up at 7am I still don't function as well as if I get up at 6pm.

It just works best for me this way, even if it makes me a bit of a freak. If I'm writing I might write for twelve hours with barely a break... then I still have to work and shop and clean etc... It's nothing for me to vacuum the house at 3am, do the shopping at midnight, and so on.

Lucky I live alone!

And the best part of sleep? Dreaming.

Hi Michaelie (and katyzzz of course)

You sound a bit like me with doing housework at unusual hours...on Sat night I couldn't sleep after I'd been out so I cleaned out a cupboard....I would've loved to have vacuumed but I thought I might wake my husband and neighbours....

Tracy,

Yes, you can't do the vacuuming when you have to be mindful of others! Lol.

All my family and friends are used to it. Whenever I go away and stay with my parents, they are not surprised to wake up and find me still at my laptop at the kitchen table - where they left me writing the night before - or having 'dinner' at 9am.

I suppose I'll have to change my ingrained habits one day, if I'm to have kids or some such. Hmmph.

That's great that you're writing though...sometimes I'm awake fretting about what I'm not writing...where's the sense in that?!

Yes, kids or men, they change things a bit...

wys, to sleep perchance to dream, as the old bard said.

And to everyone else, what fascinating reading.

Michaelie, when you have kids you'll be so damn tired you'll sleep anytime it's on offer. You could change but I can see you see no reason for that, except socialising, when it's difficult to do when everyone else is asleep.

Love you all, it never ceases to amaze me how many people are interested in sleep, even the young, ME ? - I just do it.
