Visual brain areas play vital role in short-term memory, says study

Thursday's edition of the journal Nature.

"We discovered that early visual areas play an important role in visual working memory," Frank Tong, co-author of the study, said in a statement. "How do people maintain an active representation of what they have just seen moments ago? This has long been a conundrum in the literature."

Researchers knew that early visual areas could process in fine detail visual signals from the eye, but thought these areas could not retain information. Conversely, research has shown that while higher-order brain areas can store information, they lack the sensitivity of the early visual areas.

Tong says the study's findings solve the mystery of how people are able to retain patterns with remarkable precision for many seconds, even without any stimulus.

Well folks, I guess it's time to get actively involved in some of my puzzles which I put on regularly, apart from improving your concentration and observational skills it seems they will also help your memory, you want to preserve it as long as you can, don't you, and for those who have always had a bad memory, and there's plenty of those about, this is a good, stimulating and easy way to help improve it.

Opportunity knocks but once, lay hold of the day.

I really have to be in the mood for puzzles - I'm not, right now! Isn't the brain and the mind so fascinating? What is the 'early visual area'? Imagine having that condition (explored in the film Memento) where you can't retain short term memory?

Wilson, you're great and Teresa, do try some of my brain puzzles, they should brighten you up, not stress you. early visual area is a confusing term not explained in the article, but generally the visual area is at the back of the brain, although it starts surely with the eye and the transmission of an image onto it and then the visual area at the back of the brain interprets it.

Seeing is remembering, apparently.

I'll do another post soon on areas of the brain, as people do lose track of these things.
