Children with hypertension? - they can't think
February 25th 2009 19:36
It's a very sad thing to think that children can have hypertension, surely, for some, parents are at fault, but we mustn't say that must we?
Bad nutrition, too much salt and fat, obesity and lack of exercise all contribute, but of course with some there may be a genetic component, but in no way can we say the children are at fault, and if they can't think this puts them at a huge deficit with their schooling.
Now scientists are studying the phenomenon and coming up with some interesting findings.
And not only is their thinking affected, it's their memory too.
ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2009) — Children with high blood pressure are not as good at complicated, goal-directed tasks, have more working memory problems and are not as adept at planning as their peers without hypertension, according to recent research. If they are both hypertensive and obese, they are also more likely to have anxiety and depression.
Considering the demands on a child's brain – both in continued development and in education – and the fact that up to 10 percent of the increasing population of obese children have hypertension, these novel findings could give physicians and parents more impetus to diagnose and treat high blood pressure in children
