Stem Cells linked to memory.
May 17th 2008 22:08
AUSTRALIAN researchers have discovered stem cells in the brain that are vital for learning and memory.
Working on their knowledge that stem cells were in the hippocampus they were interested in this research because people and animals produce large numbers of these during their life
They have also worked out how to activate the cells so they produce new neurons, a discovery that could eventually lead to better treatments for degenerative brain conditions of ageing, such as dementia.
Apparently the number of stem cells in the brain is not large but the scientists managed to produce a three fold increase in numbers in tissues from animals, in the laboratory. Even with a loss of these cells the machinery remains intact.
As people get older they produce less of these cells.
They are hoping this new knowledge will lead to new treatments.
The research findings came from the Queensland Brain Institute.
