Helping the Brain to Remember : from infanthood to adulthood

From Scotland comes the news that computer games can be good for you.

This was found with a study of primary school children.

9 and 10 year olds played a computer game on Nintendo for just 20 minutes each morning at school.

The games included reading tests, problem-solving exercises and memory puzzles designed to "exercise the brain".

After 10 weeks a maths test showed an average ten per cent better performance.

Completion time dropped from 17 minutes to just over 13 minutes.

Progress was also noted in behaviour and concentration.

Exercise being good for the brain has been confirmed at the cellular level.

BDNF (Brain Derived Neutrophic Factor) is seen to promote neuronal repair, learning and memory. Exercise helps brain plasticity and counteracts the effects of aging.

The effects of exercise go beyond simply increasing regional blood supply to the brain.

The release and regulation of BDNF is activity dependent whereas release of other neurotrophic factors is not.

Music can enhance the brain’s functioning power. Research studies have shown that students training with music scored higher than those that did not. 50% improvement on basic retention alone was shown Students showed over 35 points higher in math testing with music playing in the background as well as improved verbal communication.

When students learn through music it can lead to enhanced brain functions, which include logic, reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, higher retention and so on.

With a scanner attached to a person while music played a person’s brain activity was shown to respond on both the left and right side of the brain.

I've linked at the top, next to the title a most delightful treatise by David Brooks in which he playfully describes the outsourcing of his brain to the technology of the most recent times, and has found it to be so successful that his brain is no longer needed. He now cannot find his way anymore, his car does it for him, he no longer needs to remember.

He has discovered the Sacred Order of the External Mind.

This has liberated him to a newly found nirvana and he has relinquished control over his decisions to the universal mind and is now free to chant OM.

Do read his mind titillating review of the advantages of modern computerisation. You are sure to enjoy it.
