NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Sleep patterns in middle-aged women can increase their risk for stroke, researchers in the United States have found. The greatest increase in stroke risk -- 70 percent -- was noted among women who slept 9 hours or more per night, according to their report in the medical journal Stroke.

A link between sleep duration and mortality has previously been noted in a number of studies, but evidence of an association between sleep patterns and cardiovascular disease has been lacking, Dr. Jiu-Chiuan Chen, from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and co-researchers note.

So if I don't sleep much when I'm middle aged I won't have a stroke?

No, I'm afraid it doesn't work like that, it's IF you have sleep abnormalities it puts you at greater risk, there has to be some abnormality, not just the amount of sleep.

Women need 1 hour more of sleep per night than men, and some women DO need 9 hours sleep.

These things can be easily misinterpreted.

And some present flaws in their research. It's not an easy problem.

You got it Timmy,

But, actually, a lot of studies, in the past, have been done on men, not women, there would have been something that prompted this study on women, some research is far more effective than others, thank God you're a male and not so complicated as a female.

Often the preferred subjects for studies are MICE - work that one out.

Katyzzz,

Oh well. My life IS an abnormal sleep pattern, so I'll just wait for sleep dep to kill me, I suppose.

I only tend to need six hours a night.

That's not enough Dianna, try to train yourself back into better sleeping habits, there is a post here to-day and there will be more, but to-day's is about 7 tips for a good night's sleep.

You've a lifetime to do all the things you want to, you know. Life is for living and enjoying as well as working, and some things are 'priceless' like 'stopping to smell the roses'

I have never slept that long in one stretch ever! So I guess insomnia has finally come in handy!
