Expert offers advice on how best to stave off cognitive declines.

People have been advised to take measures to protect their mental wellbeing long before they experience any memory problems.

Alzheimer's disease expert Marwan Sabbagh said people who are part of the so-called baby boomer generation should be taking steps now to minimise the risk of conditions like Alzheimer's, reports Medical News Today.

He suggested that a variety of nutrients such as gingko biloba, turmeric root and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA can play their part in fending off memory problems associated with ageing.

According to the news provider, the scientist said: "There are many things like heredity that are outside our control, but there are also concrete steps we can take to maintain optimal brain health."

While a modest decline in mental function is to be expected as part of the ageing process, he argued, this can be made worse by dietary choices and other factors such as stress.

A report just released in the US has suggested individuals can dramatically reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease by making lifestyle changes.

Diet, toxic chemical exposure and lack of exercise may be key factors in the development of both conditions, according to the Environmental Threats to Healthy Ageing report.

Hey katyzzz I have always heard an ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure. We should take precautions early in life so we can live better later in life.

Very wise, Lester, and not just with the brain, with the body and lifestyle too. As I am sure you do but I would like to see others doing that too.
