Clean coal for the future?

Report

Sep 9 - What's billed as the world's first coal-fired power station to capture and store environmentally harmful carbon dioxide emissions opens in eastern Germany.

The pilot project from energy company Vattenfall will be a crucial test of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

Governments and energy firms are backing CCS, as power plants are the biggest carbon dioxide polluters. But some environmental groups are opposed to CCS, arguing it is unsafe and could divert investment from truly green sources of power.

Joanna Partridge reports for Reuters
