I think you all know my opinions on the old dope - referring to the pot, of course.

But it is good to know people in higher places think the same as I do.

I don't like the GREENS position on this, I think they should stick to what they do best - the Environment.

By Bernadine Healy, M.D.

Puff the Magic Dragon—in his naughtier incarnation—bit the dust when President Barack Obama recently made it clear that he is against legalizing marijuana. His message was delivered on his website, Change.gov, even before he placed his hand on the Lincoln Bible. Astonishingly, legalization of marijuana ranked as Priority No. 1 for the new administration among the thousands of possible actions voted upon on the website by the public. Yes, even above stem cell research, the war in Iraq, and Wall Street bailouts. Obama's prompt no to the query "Will you consider legalizing marijuana so that the government can regulate it, tax it, put age limits on it, and create millions of new jobs and create a billion-dollar industry right here in the U.S.?" dashed the hopes of many who thought our young, hip, new president—who long ago dabbled in the stuff and, by his own admission, inhaled—would come to marijuana's rescue.

Listen to the president's inauguration speech, and it seems clear why he's unwilling. In a "new era of responsibility," somehow a fat new billion-dollar U.S. marijuana industry doesn't quite square with a world that almost universally outlaws the stuff. Making weed as accessible to our children as cigarettes doesn't fit with Obama's words to parents about nurturing their children, as he and Michelle so sweetly do their own little girls. And it would be the antithesis of the inaugural pledge he made to respect science.

The overwhelming scientific view is that marijuana is BAD for BRAINS especially young ones. so don't all rush over supporting it just because you have a habit.

Katyzzz I am shocked, and surprised to find that I actually agree with Obama on something. Kentucky is the second largest pot producer in the nation, second only to California.

It is because of this that, it is unsafe to hike off the beaten paths in the woods, you could end up beaten wounded or dead. I have had drop growers to plant the stuff on my property, and have informed law enforcement about dope growers.

Some say it would save a fortune if it was legalized. There would be no need to fly expensive helicopters, and tie up thousands of man hours a season. Not to mention the tax money one could receive off the sells.

I think it would mean admitting that it was ok to smoke dope, and it is not, and I am glad that Obama doesn't either.

But there is a greater evil growing hear in the mountains, and that is prescriptions drugs sell, and use. People go to the Dr. get a prescription for narcotics, the government pays for them as most are on federal assistance. Then they turn around and sell them for lots of cash.

I see on the news hundreds arrested each month. You can't drive a mile down the road without passing a drug dealers home, and you never know who it could be. Something must be done, it is destroying our society.

In this case, I supported Obama's word wholeheartedly, Katyzzz.

By the way, if you have watched the "Pineapple Express" movie, then you'll know that Marijuana is the biggest enemy of human being!

Significant and informative comments, thank you both Lester and Wilson, and Lester I am totally shocked I didn't realize it was such a big problem in the US. I approve of a tough policy, dealer, middle men and users, if you want to get rid of drugs you must attack from every angle and abuse of prescription drugs is appalling.

I think O's failure to support legalization is more political than ideological . He knows that a movement to legalize marijuana would decimate his presidency.

Of course, he also wants to avoid having a nation full of stoners. Someone has to pay those taxes and feed the gub'mint beast.
