PARKINSON’S JAB HOPE

March 17th 2011 13:20

Parkinsons medicine GABA brain stuff

AN injection into the brain could offer hope to patients with Parkinson’s disease, a study shows.

The procedure is safe and may help those who no longer respond to drugs for the condition.

The jab tops up a compound known as GABA. When levels of this drop, problems with brain function linked to Parkinson’s disease can develop. More than 100,000 Britons suffer with the illness, which causes tremors, debilitation and memory loss.

But the study, by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in New York and published in the Lancet Neurology journal, emphasises the jab is not a cure.

Dr Michelle Gardner, from Parkinson’s UK, said: “This research shows the promise of gene therapy for neurological conditions – but further research is needed.”
