The what-ditty-what family? The Allium family -- that pungent, piquant group of plants that includes onions, garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots. Invite them to dinner tonight.
Multi Cancer Kiss-Off?
According to a review of several studies, Allium veggies may have the power to inhibit a whole host of different cancers, including colon, stomach, prostate, and possibly breast, to name a few. The protective mechanism is not entirely clear, but the veggies' high flavonoid and allyl sulfide content may have something to do with it. These compounds could neutralize the effects of carcinogens and help inhibit tumor growth.
