Not forgetting - coffee!

coffee forgetting memory alzheimer's

You'll want to grab a cup of fully-fueled caffeinated coffee.

We know coffee appears to prevent Alzheimer's disease; that appears to be true in mice. But if you like decaf, you might be shortchanging your brain of this benefit.

Researchers at USF's Byrd Alzheimer's Institute studied the effects of caffeine and coffee in mice bred to develop Alzheimer's.

Caffeine seems to help reduce beta amyloid, a sticky protein thought to contribute to memory loss. Coffee with caffeine had another benefit -- it raised levels of memory protective growth factors in the blood.

Decaf coffee didn't seem to work, even when they added the caffeine back into the mix.

The theory hasn't been tested in humans.

Earlier studies show up to five cups of coffee per day may be needed, although researchers believe two or three may be enough.

This study appears in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
