Naturopathy: Exercise the brain to prevent memory loss

Q: MY father, 65, has poor memory. He tends to forget things easily and often can’t remember what we have told him or what he did.
A: Memory problems arise due to many reasons, including inadequate blood supply to the brain, depression, sleep deprivation, poor diet and normal ageing.
A mild decline in memory and the rate of information processing may occur naturally as you age, but sometimes it can be a sign of a more persistent memory loss known as dementia.
Memory loss from normal ageing usually does not affect daily function and does not progress over time while dementia is a progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain.
Early signs of dementia do not only involve memory loss, but also problems with language, time and place disorientation, behavioural changes and difficulty performing familiar tasks.
Gingko has been shown to improve blood flow in the brain and aids in the work of brain neurotransmitters by speeding up the rate of information that is transmitted. You can also supplement your father’s diet with antioxidants (beta carotene, vitamin C, selenium) and omega-3 fatty acids.
Last, but not least, try these to improve memory: Getting regular exercise, maintain healthy eating habits (higher intake of fruits and vegetables), have good social interaction and good sleep habits, and exercise the brain to keep it active (play chess or read a book).
katyzzz does not recommend taking of supplements under normal circumstances.
Many claims are yet unproven. And, in fact, may prove harmful.
But this article is reproduced for those who wish to pursue these lines.
