The Musical Brain (LINK)

Music, like all art, is an expression of a soul – the emotional inner workings of a human being. And, much to the distress to those hardened athletes who don’t want to admit to it, playing at the top level of music takes as much effort, practice, training, and mental preparation as does playing at the top level of a sport.
Orchestral players, train endlessly on their own, then in a group setting, learn discipline, teamwork, and the definition of where each individual’s role is within the unit’s overall goals.
Unfortunately, our society is more black and white than they would like to admit. We like winners and losers, right and wrong, us versus them. We like tangible results derived at by a clearly defined set of criteria.
Art by its very nature is subjective – a person either likes it or they don’t. With the exception of specific situations, art provides few winners and losers. And there lies the rub for North Americans.
In a situation that clearly provides little contrast in black and white, the Western world has difficulty in quantifying arts existence.
If an athletic team were to raise money to travel to a far off land with the promise of returning with a report of their results, they could quantify their adventure with a checklist of wins versus losses, points scored and spectator counts. The sponsor could easily determine if their money was well spent, and they could easily determine a re-investment on the next journey
If a band were to make the same trek, their report would indicate that they played well, met a lot of people and performed before great supporters. The sponsor’s determination of value for investment is far less concrete, making it more difficult to contemplate a refinance for the next performance.
Research indicates that music comes from the same hemisphere of the brain as mathematics, and study after study indicates that young people who are successful in music are successful in most other aspects of their life.
There are no individual stats in a band. Each person performs to his best ability with the goals of the organization firmly in mind – just as in the real world. Few employers keep individual stats. The end-goal in business is for each person to work to his best ability to reach a desired result.
