Tune Up Your Brain

You know those seemingly endless hours your parents made you spend practicing the piano or learning to play the violin?

Time to say thank you, because all that practice did more than tune up your recital skills. It may have made the language areas of your brain more efficient, too. If you never took music lessons, here's why you should start.

Music and Lyrics
Researchers recently asked a group of musicians and nonmusicians to listen to -- and reproduce -- tone sequences.

Your Brain on Music
Not surprisingly, the musicians performed better on the task. But this was a surprise: As the musicians reproduced the tones, scans of their brains showed major activity in areas linked to language, leading researchers to conclude that building music skills may bolster language areas of the brain as well. In other words, studying music is like doing push-ups for your brain!

Katyzzz, if we want a three-year-old child to memorize a thing, then the music and color are the better choice, than the boring and dull words...

By the way, I loved your new avatar!

Thanks for this, Katyzzz.

One of my sons is currently learning guitar. And I am teaching both my sons the keyboard. Now I have some extra reasons to motivate them to practice.

And thank you, Katyzzz, for your lovely note in reply. Perhaps I should have said that your post will provide the key for getting my children to practice more.

That's great news, Samaritan, been there done that, I once heard of a detective who wanted to handcuff his son to the piano. sounds like a good solution, if not a popular one.
Funny stories abound about such things. Including katyzzz will to learn but not to practice, maybe one day......I'm planning to play the harp in Heaven, figure I'll need something to do.
