Music as preparation for future earning capacity devalues its true worth.

Music earnings
Signature Tune

Concern has been raised that some parents may force their children to learn music in order to increase their future earning power.

This comes as a result of research which has hinted that this may be the case.

It is well recognized that music enriches the life experience in ways that can't be counted in dollars.

Musicians express concern that the concept of musical education has been reduced to a value which can only be recognized in terms of future earning capacity and the research suggesting this is of questionable credibility.

Paychecks alone are not an indicator of someone's value and we could argue all day about the benefits of higher salary brackets and whether they mean anything at all much with respect to assessing a person's intelligence and ability.

A lifelong love of music is sufficient reward for music lessons and enriches lives in ways not able to be valued in terms of earning capacity.

Many with high paying jobs are simply work horses for some of their questionable bosses and their love of money would be better replaced by a love of learning and music with no other 'pay off' expected.

The world is full of high income earnings of limited mental capacity and is also full of those whose abilities in many ways far exceed the general population with modest earnings

There is no correlation between giftedness and earning capacity other than what is artificially created.

Do you think so, I thought it was worth giving an airing and most of what has been written is my own, but the future earnings, music lessons correlation has been 'hinted' at in research which triggered my reaction, along similar lines but rather different from the author of another article.

I have not quoted the article but have drawn on the results of the 'research' and I suspect such correlation does exist to some extent but to have a child take music lessons for that reason does not seem to be a good one.

The preoccupation with earning ability rather than a healthy lifestyle, in my opinion, is not a desirable one, all else is sacrificed for the $ and I don't think this is a good way to go.

Although having an above average income generally helps but often it just involves excess but unnecessary spending, and the cycle of sacrificing so much to have more money, is begun.

Maybe it is too far out for this site, but anything that requires thought rightly belongs here, subject to my approval, of course, as this is my site.

Your further input would be welcomed.

My resistance comes from a personal bias against parents or guardians who place their charges into what I feel is a form of bondage katyzzz, turning their kids into indentured servants under the guise of helping their futures is repugnant and calloused.

They are realizing their own ambitions through the career of their charges and reaping the perks and profits earned by their victims of circumstance. Let them make a choice when they're mature enough to do so.
