Brain and Memory

Individual genes are strings of amino acids.

Hippocampus: A structure near the center of the brain that is involved in memory, learning, timing and spatial awareness.

LTP, or long-term potentiation: The strengthening of connections between brain cells that occurs when they communicate, making subsequent communication more efficient.

Neuron: The most common type of cell in the brain (numbering in the hundreds of millions)

Theta rhythm: A naturally occurring rhythm in the brain that is hypothesized to initiate memory.

Synapse: The point at which two neurons communicate in the brain. It is actually a gap of about 20 nanometers (20-billionths of a meter) across which one neuron sends chemical signals that are received by the other. The chemicals set off cascades of events inside the receiving neuron. There are estimated to be 100 trillion to 10 quadrillion synapses in a human brain, allowing for immense memory capacity.

The above, abbreviated glossary of terms is from the Los Angeles Times link

I thought you would find this interesting and show just how compex the process of memory is.

What is Alzheimer's disease?

According to http://www.alzheimers.org.au/,

Alzheimer’s disease is a physical disease which attacks the brain resulting in impaired memory, thinking and behaviour. The disease is named for the German physician, Alois Alzheimer who, in 1907, first described it.

As brain cells die, the substance of the brain shrinks. Abnormal material builds up as “tangles” in the centre of the brain cells and “plaques” outside the brain cells, disrupting messages within the brain, damaging connections between brain cells. This leads to the eventual death of the brain cells and prevents the recall of information.

Memory of recent events is the first to be affected, but as the disease progresses, longterm memory is also lost. The disease also affects many of the brain’s other functions and consequently, many other aspects of behaviour are disturbed.

If you live in the USA you can get paid $30 to blog about their fund raising walk, which although it's not a great deal of money, it is some and better than google rates unless you're a footballer or something.

Tactics to improve a sluggish memory

Using memory strategies, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and an active mind can help keep brain power in top shape

People can be
concerned about forgetting names, misplacing objects, keeping track of tasks and remembering presentations

And now for some brain tricks, compliments of katyzzz

The following image can be used to 'unlock the eyes' as one might attempt to do when doing some of those 3D pictures which were very popular a few years ago.

This is not one of those, but I ask that you stare at the image then attempt to not focus the eyes but look beyond.

When you have unlocked them, the one image will double and you'll see two, side by side.

This is not difficult but it may require some persistence.

This post is an attempt to put more into a post to enable me to post less often and be more productive. Let's just see how it goes.

Cool katyzzz, I like the longer format. More information in one place is a good thing.

I'm afraid that I'm just no good at those picture tricks though

Thanks for the feedback Winston, you will definitely be able to do this one, but it takes time and possibly more than one attempt, just keep staring and unfocus the eyes from the picture try to look past it and after a considerable time move your eyes and/or head slightly to the left and the double image will be there.

Once you get it the next time is easier.

As for the other types, they are really dead set easy , it's just the amount that can be the tricky bit.

I'll be putting on some answers for some of them soon, and you can start at easy then gradually progress, the more you do them the easier they become and the more difficult you find them the more it will start that neural sprouting in areas that have not been well developed or have declined through lack of use.

Louie,

This is a serious concern. Have a good night's sleep and then try some brain puzzles, preferably katyzzz computer art.

Let me know next time you forget.

I'll remember when I've finished doing my own puzzles....now, let's see, just what were those puzzles again, there's some answers somewhere.

katyzzz...that's me isn't it?

Would you believe I actually checked for a previous reply, then I got the joke, I was just about to remind you that all you had to do was look above your head.

It seems like we both have some work to do.

katyzzz....did I sign off before, that's me, the master of overstatement, well I can't say the mistress, oh, I know the person of overstatement. How is all that global warming going with everyone freezing their bits off.
