How can you stay mentally fit?

June 12th 2007 22:57

Keeping brain sharp
Signature Tune

The first recommendation is exercise, of the aerobic kind. [especially for sedentary workers]
That exercise can be as little as 30 minutes three times a week.

Now, exercise your mind. Crosswords, reading or learning a language are just a few.

And don't forget certain foods, fish, fruit and vegetables, and tomatoes are recommended as having lots of antioxidants.

That's just a small, incomplete reminder.

As regards brain activity do what you enjoy rather than be confined to particular activities.

As we age our brains decline, so they say, but evidence suggests we can stay sharp, delay or prevent what is known as cognitive decline [ the slight and gradual loss of memory].

So continue to be brain aware and take the appropriate action.

The attached link takes you to a brief article but it is a quick read for those already weighed down by too much reading material.

So, don't forget to take a break and introduce some variety for your mind.

Good advice katyzzz. I don't get enough physical exercise, and I probably don't eat enough fruit. I'm going to have to hope that lots of reading and seafood consumption is enough to keep my brain from going on the fritz too soon.

Very useful post

Winston,

I hate to tell you but exercise is the number one requirement. Build up to it if necessary and walk wherever you can or while waiting etc.

Fruit is a must for general, heart and brain nutrition, vitamins and antioxidants [cancer prevention and healthy immune system]

The rest seems easy for you but do concentrate on variety from time to time and in spare moments.

It's good to see you taking an interest, it's a very healthy looking brain in your banner, it's deficiency seems to be it is not attached to anything.

Great to have your visits and your comments.

I know, katyzzz, my lack of drive when it comes to exercise is my primary failing. I am up and about a lot at work, but seldom do any regimented exercise outside of that. The primary reason for this is because it bores me to tears. iPod helps a bit, but not enough....

When we finally manage to sell our condo and buy a proper house, I plan to buy a bike. I really enjoy biking, but have no place to store one at present. Soon enough, I hope.

As for fruit, I really like it quite a bit. But good heavens, there's no way to eat as much as the food pyramid recommends. I'd be stuffed before I got to eat anything else!

Fortunately, I have youth on my side. Lots of time to work on keeping the ol' gray matter in shape

Winston,

I agree with what you say about modern recommendations.

If we ate everything we should we'd never stop eating, ridiculous really.

I'm glad you move around work a lot, that's a big plus.

As for walking have you tried 'writing a book' in your head, photography or planning photography in your mind as you walk or something else, that takes the boredom out of it.

Exercise some creativity in your exercise.

I do understand what you say, and you can never start too young. Cognitive decline can begin as early as 30 or even younger.

I'm sure you'll come up with something.

katyzzz...do go to different places to walk, variety keeps boredom at bay, but it's hard, I'm slipping up too at present.

we walk almost nightly!! and have been for about ten years. we do have our times we slack, but then jump right back into it. if we don't walk we do stuff like tennis, volleyball and such. in the winter we use the treadmill, gazel and stair climber.
walking will be even more fun. They just put a walking trail along the creek that runs behind our house. i can't wait to walk it and take pics.

Aw, why did you have to tell that info about mind slippage at 30 to a guy who just turned 30?
