Is there a male preference in Art?
January 21st 2007 11:02
Responding to a comment from one of my male visitors I gave this concept considerable thought.
There are differences in the male/female brain relating to gender and it would be an exceptional circumstance if male preference in art did not distinguish itself from female preference.
Whilst the most apparent difference relates to love of the female form, we have to go back in sociobiological history and examine the concepts of male the hunter/gatherer, provider, protector, warrior right up to the current conception of male the SNAG.
Modern day man is still expected to provide for his family, he still goes to war, he is still driven by testosterone and is drawn to dominance. He loves the competition and rivalry of sport and distinguishes his manhood with cars with big wheels.
He is not so drawn to the 'pretty' as the female, he likes his status, perhaps likes different colours and so I have made this somewhat feeble attempt to cater to the art tastes of modern day man.
The comments will, hopefully, be beneficial and females should not be deterred from commenting.
I see a lot of male/female difference in the writings and comments of the Orble community so it will be interesting to share some of those comments here.
May male and female each enjoy this exhibition and respond accordingly.
What is your opinion?

Flashes of memories
The black, white and grey ones are a rather interesting break from the colours, I like them. May sound bizarre but the first things I thought of were reflections in water, ripples, droplets, suns..
Great!

Double A plus for you two, it will be interesting to see what emerges, if anything.
I think, I ponder. Does this mean I am not. Therefore, of course.

Blue and red as a combination doesn't appeal to me at all. I enjoy abstract art, and enjoy strong colours, but also enjoy variety as well. Soft colours with soft forms don't grab me and the two black and white pictures you've offered aren't my kind of thing really.

I thought your female form was amusing, and your setting sun was almost too bright to look at -- lucky that it was filtered through a watery haze.
You've made me curious whether there are concrete differences. For instance, I've heard it suggested that females have better nightvision, and males are better at seeing in bright light.

I'm a female *curtsey*
I was really drawn to the black and white ones in this 'room.' Wow and how!
I love them, especially the Phantom - wow : I find it exciting and sexy???
The "wheels' remind me of Bathurst Boys and Racing cars... not sexy at all *lol*
Hope that helps with the tally, looking forward to the results!
have a good evening,

Yes, I would have thought red would be good for men.
Adrian,
I'm talking perception, not so much 'mechanics' haven't heard what you said about the eye, glad you liked my little nude, are others lacking in testosterone, do you think?
Lilla,
Bathurst boys, not sexy, wonder what they'd think about that, I would have thought guys would like the greys and the big wheels but everything at a subconscious level, I thought they'd also like the signature tune and the cute nude, I would also have thought more guys would like the geometric and darker colours, this is too small a sample, but It seems for a female you did well for a male. Perhaps I'm glad you didn't refer to the nude, but I rather liked the humorous impact of that one and flesh never fails to draw a male audience.
I guess my little experiment must continue, I am sure a director of a gallery would give a ready answer, but then, this is a new art form really.
The subconscious should still have its role.
A lot of people are missing a lot of imagery so I'm going to do a little more explaining with a couple.
Thank you all, all my comments are relevant to all of you really.
