Maintaining your Brain
May 2nd 2007 07:31
Shocking as it may seem to those who consider themselves quite young brain cells begin to die around age 30. At 50 one-third of adults experience some short-term memory loss.
Researchers at Tufts University have found that people with low levels of B-vitamins are more likely to display mild cognitive impairment. Foods such as whole grains, green leafy vegetables and broccoli/cauliflower are good sources of B vitamins. And don't forget the power of Vegemite.
Three servings a day is recommended. Fruits such as blueberries and strawberries, rich in antioxidants, have been shown to slow the decline in mental function.
The brain is a hungry for glucose when it is starving.
The best choice is complex carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables, dried beans, and whole grains.
Bluefish, salmon, swordfish, sardines, anchovies, and even lake trout are all examples of fatty fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids improve mental acuity in addition to keeping the heart and blood vessels in good shape. Two servings of fish per week are recommended but not more than this of oily fish.
For variety eat walnuts and flaxseed. Reduce your use of Omega-6 fatty acids by using olive and canola oil instead of corn oil.
Increase the antioxidants you eat such as foods containing vitamins E and C which may help with memory.”
Food sources are better than vitamins.
Most of these things have been mentioned before, these are just a refresher.
