Lumosity's neuroscience glossary will clarify any terms or processes that may be pertinent but unfamiliar as you embark on a brain training regimen and begin to learn more about how the mind works
Brainstem AKA Hindbrain
The “reptilian” brain; part of the brain connecting the spinal cord to the cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum; made up of the medulla, pons and midbrain (tectum, tegmentum); regulates systems related to basic survival such as breathing, circulation, blinking, digestion, etc.
Cogniton
The manipulation and assimilation of sensory information towards the formation of goal orientated action.
Dopamine
A neurotransmitter found in multiple areas of the brain, involved in reward systems, movement and other behavior.
Limbic system
Interconnected areas of the brain important for emotions and memory; includes the amygdala and hippocampus.
Neural stem cell
Cells found globally in the developing brain, as well as at certain sites in the adult brain (the ventricles and hippocampus); capable of forming neurons, astrocytes, and glia as well as new neural stem cells; implicated in adult memory and brain repair.
Plaques and tangles
Plasticity
The brain’s ability to adapt via changes in neuronal connections or in the efficiency of synaptic transmissions.
