The European Commission has called on EU countries to pool research efforts to prevent, better treat and care for people with Alzheimer's and dementia.
EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou says cases of neurodegenerative disorders are likely to rise as Europe's population ages.
The EU executive says member states need to work together to diagnose dementia earlier and to avoid duplication in Alzheimer's research.
It also proposed that member states sign up to joint projects and share know-how. The EU has 94 million Euro (£81.3 million) available to help fund projects.
The Commission says care costs of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases across the 27-nation bloc were 130 billion Euro($112.5 billion) in 2005.
It says the number of sufferers will double from seven million by 2030.
