Pot and your brain.

A new study on long-term cannabis use suggests the drug can cause significant brain abnormalities, affecting the memory and emotional processing.

The study by researchers at the Universities of Melbourne and Wollongong says the effects can be equivalent to those experienced by people with a mild traumatic brain injury.

They say the study also documents for the first time, that long term marijuana use affects all users, not just high risk categories such as the young and those susceptible to mental illness.

The chief executive of Melbourne's Odyssey House, Stefan Gruenert, says he is not surprised by the findings.

"If you're using cannabis daily, heavily and over a long period of time, the people in this study had been using for about ten years, then you are likely to have changes in the brain that are likely to lead to or mimic some of the symptoms of things like paranoia, memory loss, confusion," he said.

Mr Gruenert says the findings should serve as a warning about all long-term drug use.

"Anything used in heavy dose inappropriately for a long term can lead to damage," he said.

"I think this is another piece of information for us as a society to make us stop and think about whether legalising any of our current illicit drugs is a wise idea."

Alcohol causes far more brain damage and drinkers are more aggressive than pot smokers. Pot also has health benefits for cancer patients. I say legalise pot and make drinking illegal, it's way more harmful.

I don't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, either, the pot finding is on the news, WATCH IT.

You are wrong, and we are not making comparisons, pot is harmful, very harmful, get up to date and get off "pot".

This is not open to discussion.

Sigh, he sucked so many gullible innocents into the abyss, I get angry just thinking about him and his undue influence...

Some of my old friends dropped out with acid and never returned from the farm, funny huh?

Try telling that to some of them around here. They know it all. They think.

Nope, it appears that every generation has to learn the lesson(s) for themselves. Part of the karma cycle I'm sure.

I never said I smoked it. I said it causes less problems than alcohol. Neither does your brain good in high quantities but THC does HELP cancer patients in chemotherapy to combat the incessant vomiting. You are very closed minded and quick to conclusion jumping.

Anon, there is medical version of pot that alleviates the nausea without the high; I for one hate the influence of alcohol and its negative impact on society.

For example, many vets with PTSD are very dangerous when drunk, but as you say, are to lethargic to care when stoned to get violent.

The paradox for me is that I take enough drugs daily to keep a druggie happy, about all it does for me is support the claim on my psych papers which declarie me sane.

I think both alcohol and pot are equally dangerous, although pot smoking does help on certain cancer patients, but then again, it depends what sort of cancer it is reffering to.

And from all the health hazzard brain damaging alcohol and smoke, don't forget pollution will one way or another damage our brain cells as well, before we manage to mutate and evolve to suit into the environment.

Good post Katyzzz. Have a blessed day.
