How a nicotine patch could boost your memory

Nicotine patches are being tested for their effect on memory.

Previous studies suggested that short-term use improves memory in those with early Alzheimer's.

One trial found that four weeks of the nicotine treatment halved decision times in memory tests.

Now, a year-long clinical trial at three centres in the U.S. is under way to see whether the patches - ranging from 5-15mg - improve memory over the longer term.

Memory disorders may be caused by a lack of certain brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine.
When the brain is working normally, this chemical helps brain signals travel along nerves to and from the body and other parts of the brain.

These are essential for brain activity such as memory.

However, in Alzheimer's disease these neurotransmitters are reduced.

It is thought that nicotine improves memory by mimicking the action of acetylcholine.

How pulling a tooth may help treat strokes
Cells taken from stroke patients' own teeth could be used to improve their ability to move.

Australian scientists are pioneering a new technique using tooth stem cells to repair brain damage. The transplanted cells are able to turn into healthy new brain cells, restoring movement to affected limbs. (Around 50 per cent of stroke survivors need help with everyday tasks such as eating and dressing.)

The cells are harvested by extracting a single tooth and removing the cells from the dental pulp - the tissue in the centre. It takes up to six weeks to culture enough cells for transplant.

Because the body recognises the cells as its own, there is no chance of rejection, as with conventional transplants from donors. It is hoped that the treatment - which is being trialled on animals - could be available within a few years.

Ease asthma with a simple supplement
Magnesium supplements may help to reduce asthma symptoms. Trial results show that patients given oral supplements daily for six-and-a-half months had fewer problems and used fewer asthma medication.

Although previous studies have found a link between low levels of magnesium in the diet and more frequent and worse asthma attacks, there's been little research into taking supplements.

In the American study, 52 men and women with mild-to-moderate asthma were given 340mg of magnesium citrate or a placebo.

Those among the group taking the magnesium supplements had improved lung function; they also reported that their overall quality of life had improved.

It's thought low magnesium increases levels of histamine - which is released by the body's immune system and is responsible for asthma symptoms.

Really? Perhaps that's why smokers feel that they need a ciggie to get through the day(s)...!

Unfortunately they do an incredible amount of harm to their bodies, and the penalty comes with the irreversible consequences later, and often well ahead of average rates of decline and suffering.

I think you'll find a patch does not have quite the same bodily effects, or it would be banned long term, which is not its usual use, but it's nice to have a visit from you Lara, console yourself with something tasty, even if only on a Monday.
