Find yourself getting forgetful? Here’s how to boost your concentration

Published June 10, 2010 by Roberta Shepherd in Lifestyle

Sometimes I find myself completely forgetting commitments I’ve made or tasks I have to complete. Some women have offered me the consolation of “baby brain,” which, apparently, can be considered a viable excuse even a year beyond having been pregnant and giving birth. For those who haven’t been pregnant, let me just share that it’s quite amazing how you can feel very brain-dead and forgetful while pregnant.

My clients frequently express their difficulties with failing memory, lack of focus and concentration. The average adult short-term memory span is seven items and lasts for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute. Long-term memory refers to remembering anywhere beyond the span of short-term memory and can last up to decades.

So, what can you do to enhance your memory and concentration?

Let’s start with a very simple solution: water. I have a recent, glaring example of how water can influence mental acuity. I usually start my day with one to two large glasses of water. Yesterday, however, was a busy morning and I neglected to drink water. On the way to work, I wondered why I was so exhausted and fuzzy-headed. At 2 p.m., it occurred to me that I hadn’t had a single glass of water yet! I rectified the situation as soon as I had the chance with two large glasses of water and immediately felt more clear-headed, focused and energized. The brain needs water to function most optimally and more often than not, simply drinking more water will help your memory and increase productivity.

Systemic candida infection — candidiasis — is when bacterial imbalance, rooted in the lower digestive tract, wreaks havoc on the entire system, creating a myriad of physical symptoms. One of the prominent symptoms associated with systemic candida is forgetfulness, lack of focus and concentration. This will often be a chronic problem until the candida is eradicated from the system by cleansing and herbal intervention.

Caffeine, though frequently used by many to periodically improve mental performance and alertness, causes ‘crash’ symptoms as the effects wear off, thereby worsening focus and concentration. Try green tea. Green tea has long been reputed for its nourishing qualities to the brain and ability to improve intellectual performance. Green tea imparts a much clearer, cleaner and lasting sense of increased focus and concentration.

The brain is made of a large percentage of fat and is thereby nourished by ingesting healthy fats and oils. Try Udo’s oil, a combination of healthy, essential fatty acids that optimize intellectual functioning. I take one to two tablespoons followed by water daily, or use it on salads.

There are many greens powders available at local health food stores. Greens powders provide full-spectrum nutrition, from plant sources, that may not be being derived from a well-rounded diet. A full spectrum of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, of course, are necessary in order that mental health thrive. I recently bought a very palatable version of a green’s powder called Barlean’s Greens, berry flavour, sweetened with stevia leaf powder. Liquid chlorophyll, considered one of many superfoods, has similar effects on mental acuity and is something I take daily.

Finally, the following herbs have excellent reputations for nourishing mental health: ginseng, astragalus, schisandra, guarana and roseroot. Respectively, these herbs are few among many that are noted for helping cases of mental fatigue, strengthening the nervous system, increasing intellectual activity, increasing mental alertness, improving learning and memory. Astragalus can have adverse side-effects, so please consult a licensed herbal practitioner first.
