Clean out your cupboards!
November 17th 2007 00:52
Shake down your kitchen cabinets, your refrigerator, your secret boxes, and everywhere else you stash food, and make room for the good guys.
Read ingredient labels; if something includes simple carbohydrates, added sugars, fructose -- especially high-fructose corn syrup -- trans fat, saturated fat, or non-whole-grain flours, throw it out.
"Diabetes ahead!" or "Imminent heart attack!"
Those labels do not appear, but perhaps they should, but labels that really mean the same thing include
......dextrose, sucrose -- anything with "ose." And stay away from mannitol or anything with "ol"; they are alcohols that are quickly converted to sugar. Avoid them
Stay away from foods that have more than 4 grams of sugar in them. Even "natural sugars" like maple syrup and molasses are still sugar, so limit them to fewer than 4 grams per serving, unless you're eating pure fruit (we make that exception because fruit has so many nutrients).
For fats: Besides saturated fats (fewer than 4 grams per serving) and trans fats (avoid them all), avoid foods with other fat code words, such as partially hydrogenated, palm oil, and coconut oil.
My apologies for ruining what you had anticipated to be a good weekend, but it's done in the interest of lots of future good weekends.
Cleaning out cupboards, especially if you're not good at it or hardly ever do it is good for the brain, it's the strain, you know and learning new directions and ultimately should avoid stress.
Most of this information is brought to you from Real Age, available on the Web.
Perhaps your waistline may benefit a little too. All that bending, reaching, turning and twisting
and then running away from it all by going for a walk and developing some new shopping strategies.

I can do with some of that.
katyzzz, you must get to 10 asap, I found getting from 8 to 9 really difficult and then I seemed to bounce quite quickly to 10, those were rough times.

Thanks for the "ol" tip. I tend to avoid anything I can't pronounce. The oly 'hol" I can claim as mine is that I am an 'Aquaholic.'
I remember reading that clutter is the worst form of 'thing' to have around you when you reach menopause and beyond... even worse than a husband (can you believe that?)...tee hee.
