Brainstorming in Groups: Good or Bad?
August 15th 2007 23:11
I've never been much in favour of Groups, but, I suppose, for some things it is important.
But, generally, I haven't the patience or tolerance to sit listening too often to senseless rubbish.
But, what of the Brainstorming approach. Haven't we been led to believe this is a good idea?
SOME RESEARCH
From Sage Journals, on line and the University of Texas:
Research has shown that individuals produce fewer ideas in interactive brainstorming groups than when brainstorming alone. However, group brainstorming remains a popular technique in organizations and industry. One basis for this popularity may be the perceived productivity of group brainstorming.
From Kobe university, Japan, comes
results suggest that a form of synergy between diversity and similarity operates in group creativity.
And going back to the first study
The results of a third experiment indicate that the illusion of group productivity may derive in part from the opportunity for social comparison that is available in group brainstorming. It also appears that individuals tend to take credit for a disproportionate amount of the brainstorming activity in groups.
I've given the link at the top for those wanting to pursue this further, there are a number of abstracts for books dealing with these areas and the accompanying point of view to which you might like to refer.
What do you think of group brainstorming?

They are both very interesting points of view, and see, Catherine, my art has got your brain moving, Aimz, what about you?
I really appreciated this, it is good to have people air their views without having someone jump in to correct them and I must admit I am often one of those guilty ones, but I really move things along in a group when others just sit there mute, and sometimes I actually feel I play a positive role.
Some so called top students can be particularly difficult.
I was really pleased that I've had responses to this.
