How Solar Power Helps Your Brain, Too

July 19th 2009 21:09
Solar power for the brain
Signature Tune

Solar power isn’t just a smart move in the home. It’s a smart move for your head, too.

So step outside and power up your brain. Research shows that a proper amount of the sunshine vitamin (that’s D, for short) in your system may help you think faster.

D for Deduction
In a study of older European men, those with low levels of vitamin D in their blood did worse on a mental processing test that required quick thinking. Researchers aren’t sure how vitamin D helps the brain to process information, but they think that it might help certain neuroprotective pathways. Here’s another vitamin that can help your brain.

Sun Smarts
Of course, in this era of ever-growing skin cancer rates, you still want to be smart about the sun, so don’t overdo it. Most people can get enough vitamin D with about 10 or 15 minutes of sun exposure twice a week without sunscreen. Or look up vitamin D food sources with this tool and skip the sun. Here are some other, sun-free ways to rev up your cognitive skills:

Eat your veggies. Your brain loves broccoli.

Have a walk-along. Regular cardio exercise can increase your brain size.

Be a kid. Mind-stimulating games strengthen your mental muscle.

You’re only 30 minutes away from a faster brain.

I think we are coming to really know about Vitamin D benefits and perhaps we should adjust the daily requirement based on food and sun. As I remember too much of Vitamins A and D can be toxic, and my opinion is that we need to adjust our intake of Vit-D based on sunshine and food requirements.

Speaking for someone who lives in a world of 'little sunshine' winters are depressing without sun, even if you eat your broccolli!

Dr. Oz should know this btw. I'll bet that we will see this come out.

It's been mentioned before on this blog, signals, by far the best source of Vit D, is the sun, 10 mins to 1/2 hour per day is recommended, as for the seasonal affective disorder, (SAD) it's the light you need which can be created artificially.

With sun and light you can avoid all those nasty little (harmful?) pills.

Great to hear from you and have your insight.

The sun for humans is alot better than for electricity, which is a waste of money.

Good point Howard. But I guess the sun's health benefits are the big plus.
