Stem Cells - understanding a HUGE topic

Stem Cells

After the interest shown yesterday on my post on the little blind girl and the risky use of stem cells I thought you might be interested in knowing just a bit more about stem cells and their use in medicine, they are not without risk and I doubt that many realize this.

Researchers tend to present limited information based on their own specific interests and the so called 'informed' public clamour for the problematic results we are led to believe are achievable.

Would that life were so simple.

Many are seeking a time restriction of 14 days after the beginning of cell division.

The next issue is funding, reputedly in the millions and with no end in sight to continued claims on the public purse.

Claims are that cures for diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's can be found and the fact that adult stem cells are already being used for these purposes is ignored.

The fear is that such practices will lead to cloning of human beings, cloning carries many risks and often results in imperfect and impaired animals being created and having to be put down.

But these factors are denied, no one wants it known that anyone wants to clone a human being.

Cloning bans will, however, stay in place.

This is just an introduction to some of the issues, it is far from covering everything about stem cells, which really is a very big topic, and I'll leave those other issues to progressive later posts.

Hey katyzzz, adult stem cells have shown some promise, while Embryonic stem cells have shown to be very risky, and in my opinion stopped. Why continue something that carries so much risk when there is something better at your hands already.

Vested interests, Lester, vested interests, that's about all I can say.
