Learning about the keyboard and function keys
August 5th 2007 11:56
This is all about computer literacy and improving your knowledge, so if you know it all please move on. But, before you move on, if you are of a generous nature you may like to suggest some tricks or uses that you are familiar with but which we may not be. That would really be very helpful.
But for those of us who are just learning or simply improving this post should prove to be of some value.
Of course, every keyboard has the usual typing keys to enable letters to be put together into words and phrases and sentences and paragraphs and documents and blogs etc.
Many have these skills from a past era but do not know much about the function keys.
These appear at the top of the keyboard numbered generally F1 to F12.
F1 is generally a help key and will call up a menu. Try it and try each one in turn, you won't become familiar with these things instantly but it is good to have some grasp of what these keys are all about.
F2 renames a file. You will need to use Alt Ctrl F2 to open a new document and using Ctrl F2 will give you a print preview.
F3 may open a search feature and using Shift F3 will change text from upper to lower or a capital at the beginning of each word.
F4 will find a window or repeat the last action performed.
Alt F4 will close the program
F5 will refresh the page or reload the document window
F6 moves the cursor to the address bar
Ctrl Shift F6 opens to another open window
F7 gives spell and grammar check
Shift F7 runs a thesaurus on the word highlighted
F8 accesses the safe mode
F9 is very specific and not likely to be of much use to a beginner
F10 activates the menu bar
Shift F10 is the same as right clicking
F11 opens to a full screen
F12 opens a save as window
Shift F12 saves the document.
Ctrl Shift F12 prints a document
More on this in another post.
