Football and Motor Neuron Disease
March 25th 2007 01:01
From the Sun Online News comes this rather disturbing finding.
PLAYING football may increase the risk of Motor Neurone Disease, claims a research team.
They found three former amateur players in the Newbury and Basingstoke leagues developed the brain disease simultaneously in their 50s.
King’s College London scientists have asked the Football Association for medical records.
Study leader Dr Ammar Al-Chalabi said: “Only two in 100,000 in the UK develop MND each year so a cluster like this is highly unexpected.”
The paralysing disease killed soccer stars Don Revie and Jimmy Johnstone. Some experts believe heading the ball can trigger the condition.
So what do Orble sports followers think? Is head protection required? Or don't you think anyone cares?
