Are Family values being compromised?

Family values compromised

From The Manchester Evening News of 9/3/07 we hear of this skirmish between two political points of view.

TORY leader David Cameron today rounded on Gordon Brown, accusing the Chancellor of being on the wrong side of a "vital" debate on marriage and family values.

Mr Cameron said Mr Brown had "penalised" marriage through his tax and benefit rules and had then compounded this mistake by putting himself on the side of selfish individualism.

He told the Scottish Tories in Perth: "Nearly one in two cohabiting parents split up before their child's fifth birthday, compared to one in 12 married parents.

"That's why I support marriage and will back it through the tax system."

Mr Cameron accused Labour of being "too soft and superficial" to find serious solutions to the problems that resulted from family breakdown, and of believing that marriage and commitment were part of the past, not the future.

"Earlier this week, Gordon Brown put himself on the wrong side of this vital debate," said Mr Cameron.

Marriage

"We know that his policies have penalised marriage.

"Thanks to his tax and benefit rules, many couples with children are better off if they split up.

"Instead of recognising this mistake, and pledging to do something about it, he's simply compounded it.

"He put himself on the side of the old-fashioned anything-goes individualism that's all about me-me-me."

The Tory leader went on: "What children need in the fast-changing modern world is the strength, the stability, the confidence that comes from a loving home with two parents caring for them.

"I will never be frightened of saying these things."

What views do you have on such matters. Are you married, plan to be married, co-habiting, and do you have children and what are your concerns for their future well being and your own financial capacity to cope?

Do share your views and others will have a chance to respond.
