Experimental Melanoma Drug Shrinks Brain Tumors
October 11th 2010 22:21
An experimental drug developed by GlaxoSmithKline to fight melanoma reduced the size of brain tumors in nine out of 10 patients with advanced melanoma and controlled the metastasis in all 10. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is very hard to treat once it has spread and travels via the bloodstream to the brain very easily. Brain tumors are the biggest concern with melanoma so these results have pleasantly surprised researchers. Georgina Long from Melanoma Institute Australia, who led the early-stage Phase I/II study, told the European Society for Medical Oncology congress that "Until now, melanoma has been notoriously resistant to drug therapy in general, and responses in highly lethal brain metastases are particularly uncommon.” A final-stage phase III study has been planned.
