So, what can you tell me about email?

Junk mail email filters
Signature Tune

Apparently computer users are becoming MORE savvy.

More are using filters to counteract the objectionable spam.

What is spam? Spam is "junk mail", unsolicited email that seeks to get your money out of you often by devious means and more than often enough promises you frequent lottery wins of vast sums of money or unusual inheritances which suck in the naive and unwary.

Of email users 71 percent use filters, 41 percent use their own filters to clean their inboxes, and 44 percent protect their e-mail addresses online.

What is a filter? a filter is piece of software which takes up an email message. It can then sort the messages and collect "spam" in one spot or it can even throw it away.

I can only assume that those who use their own filters have software specially designed for them or do it themselves if they are sufficiently computer savvy, getting into the nerd of geek character it seems to me.

Age and level of education affects how people see spam.

Under 50's are more likely to say spam is annoying.

67% of college graduate Internet users, compared to 45% of the lesser educated, find spam annoying. Additionally, users with both work and personal accounts are more annoyed with spam.

So what do we do about it? Legislate more would solve some of the problems, filter more would help overall. There are free filter software programs available but generally you soon find "things" you don't want popping up all over the place.

Old users will know what I mean, new users may still be confused.

Stick to well authenticated software
carrying with it recommendations from a reliable source seems to be the way to go and sending back things to be 'unsubscribed" wherever possible, which is generally shown right at the end of the message, helps.

As for counteracting the 'out and out crooks', it seems we're stuck with a lot of them until someone comes up with a bright idea as to how to trace them for the average cash limited user.

One thing I don't want is to let technology dominate my bank account.

What are your views? and do any of you have anything you'd like to add. I'd be delighted to hear from you.
