Music to your ears? And to your Heart, as well

November 14th 2008 19:21
Music heart
Signature Tune

From: Medical Breakthroughs - Ivanhoe

We often say certain sounds are like music to our ears. Researchers now believe they may be music to our hearts as well.

In a new study conducted among ten healthy volunteers, they found listening to enjoyable music significantly increased the dilation of blood vessels. Compared to baseline readings, the average upper arm blood vessel diameter increased by 26 percent after the participants listened to their favorite tunes. By contrast, when study subjects were asked to listen to music they didn’t like, their blood vessels actually contracted.

Country music most often brought on these positive changes, but the investigators believe any music a person enjoys would probably have the same effect.

How does listening to enjoyable music help relax the blood vessels? The researchers chalk the finding up to a physiological reaction involving brain chemicals called endorphins that are known to have positive effects in the body.

The study, which builds on previous research showing laughter can also be good for cardiovascular health, has lead the authors to believe simple things can promote heart health.

“Needless to say, these results were music to my ears because they signal another preventive strategy that we may incorporate in our daily lives to promote heart health,” study author Michael Miller, M.D., director of preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was quoted as saying.

I have to laugh when you say 'country music most often brought on these changes'. The other day in our office, some country music came on the radio that plays all day in the office of one of the workers, and one of the other staff was out of there like a shot!
Personally while I don't find country music makes my blood boil, it can be more irritating than blood flow inducing...!

Perhaps we'd better just stick to the classics then, I don't mind a little bit of country music, but only now and again.

Apart from classics I love music with a good strong beat, rock'n roll type of thing, but I like many different forms of music, but don't like 'nasty' lyrics.

My blood vessels seem to be doing OK but I must confess I have rather sacrificed music in favour of blogging, I guess we all need a change now and then, but my music is starting to pick up again.

Good to have a visit from you Mike and you gave me a laugh descibing the antics in your office.

Yup, I'm more of a classics man myself, but I can take most music and enjoy it...

Honestly, Katyzzz. I'm loved all types of music, except the alternative type, where it's really annoying and distracting to listen with...

Hey katyzzz I loved and listen to country when country wasn't cool. You know someone wrote a country song about that. ( I was Country when Country wasn't cool) Good post katyzzz.

Hi Wilson and Lester, it seems we are all in accord when it comes to loving music, this post is quite novel but it seems to be authentic.
