Diet is More Important to Weight Loss than Exercise

Weight loss is a consistent hot topic. Everyone wants to lose a few pounds. With all the diet books out there, and new fitness products, pills and plans promising to help you shed the weight quick, you're probably left bewildered, wondering who is right. What is the secret? How can you lose weight? It's easier said than done but there are two aspects to the approach. First, you have to exercise. Second, you have to eat right. Sounds simple enough. Yet it seems to be a struggle for the majority of people who want to be healthier.
Both diet and exercise are needed for a well rounded weight loss program. However, if one has to pinpoint which is more important, experts agree that dieting is the more important factor. According to msnbc.com, programs that focus on dietary change produce 2-3 times more weight loss than those which focus on exercise. Exercising can only take you so far. It is not really possible to get the body you want just by exercising. At some point, your results will come to a screeching hault. This is where most people throw in the towel. It is frustrating to bust your butt and see absolutely no changes.
If you eat healthy all the time, you will see much more results, even if you don't exercise. Simply for the fact that sound nutrition can yield results independent of exercise, it is the more important variable. If you absolutely cannot find time to workout, or are not healthy enough to do so, you can experience healthy weight loss by manipulating your diet. Eating frequently helps maintain a good metabolic rate. According to WebMD, having a small meal or snack every 3 to 4 hours keeps your metabolism running well. You should focus on making sure every meal has the proper ratio of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Diet plans vary though so its best to check with your doctor or nutritionist for the best plan for your goals. The calories that you intake need to be less than the calories you burn. This is the key to losing weight. Nutrition is measured in calories and is a lot easier to account for than calories burned during exercise. This makes nutrition the more important aspect.
Though dieting may have the greater effect, anyone will tell you that for a long lasting and truly healthy body, exercise is important. More muscle means a higher metabolic rate which burns more calories, plus if you want your body to really look good, muscle tone is important. Perseverance is what separates success from failure. As long as you are improving every day, you are never truly failing. Exercise and nutrition go hand in hand if you want to get your dream body and keep it. Just don't forget that your results in the gym can be completely destroyed by a poor diet.
