APPLE VALLEY • Colorful flowers, rich sunsets and starry night skies line the walls of Valley Crest Residential Care.

But these aren’t just ordinary works of art. They are the creations of the residents themselves.

The Residents and Arts program at Valley Crest, which began in February, is designed to help residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia use art as therapeutic expression. The new therapy is part of the center’s patented “Rediscovery” program, which helps highlight skills residents already had but might have forgotten because of their disease.

Research has not yet determined the exact reason art therapy is helpful to Alzheimer’s patients. Art therapy can help patients improve communication, focus, relationships and recollection of some memories, according to Medical Post Magazine of Toronto, Ohio
