Carers for dementia patients fill a critical need.
There are some 600 million people age 60 or older in the world. The number is growing. It will double by 2025, reaching 2 billion by 2050, according to the World Health Organization.
People are living longer than before, with the average life expectancy in developed countries ranging from 76 to 80 years. Today, as many as 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. As people live longer and the population ages, Alzheimer's disease will become more prevalent.

A new project has been launched which aims to help people with dementia benefit from self-directed support.
The Mental Health Foundation is aiming to make such support available through such things as individual budgets, direct payments and personal budgets to people living with dementia and their carers.
The decision comes as a result of the Health & Social Care Act 2008, which allows the provision of individual budgets.
Before this amendment, legislation had prevented those who "lack mental capacity" get such self-directed support.
