Cut 500 Calories at Your Desk
January 15th 2012 22:42
Make it to the gym 4 to 5 days a week? Great! Take the stairs in lieu of the elevator? Way to go! Work a desk job? Not so good. Fortunately, there's an easy way to cut calories and stay active while you work.
Tuck a portable pedal exerciser (also called a compact exercise bike) under your desk. Why? Because even if you're a gym rat or highly active during your off hours, sit-down-jobs can still wreak havoc on your waistline, your health, and even your longevity.
Pedal While You Work
These quiet, simple gizmos, which look like a pair of bicycle pedals on a small metal frame, cost so little, nearly anyone can have one. (Check online or in local big-box stores). A new study has shown that even if you pedal for only an hour or so off and on during the day, you'll burn about 500 calories and cut your risk of all kinds of health trouble. If you really get into it, pretend you're chasing the front-runner's yellow jersey in the Tour de France (move over, Lance Armstrong) . . . for a few minutes, anyway!
Pedal at Home
Don't relegate this nifty device to your desk. Use it while you surf the Web at night or watch TV. As your feet and legs spin away, we bet the whole family will want to use your pedaler. Let 'em! By the way, send this tip to your employers: Fitness equipment like this can save more in healthcare expenses than the equipment costs -- and it will increase productivity to boot!
