The Sugar That Staves Off Hunger - lead me to it.

Sugar is sugar, right? Maybe not. Turns out that there is one type of sweetener that helps fill you up, while another leaves you craving more.

The two sugars in question: glucose and fructose. Glucose appears to quell hunger, and fructose seems to ramp it up.

Sweet, and Then Some

The sugars may affect your appetite differently because of the unique ways in which they affect malonyl-CoA, an important appetite-suppressing molecule in the brain. Glucose causes malonyl-CoA to rise, resulting in less food intake. Fructose, on the other hand, lowers malonyl-CoA, resulting in more food intake.

Interesting! Wonder if this is why Baby A always seems hungry after I've given her a heap of fruit for breakfast? It's amazing how much there is to learn about food, I feel like I need a degree in nutrition just to navigate all the intricacies of diet and work out what I should be feeding her (and myself!)

great article Katyzzz, I carry Glucose tabs with me on my long walks so if my sugar level drops I can get it back up before passing out.

Carmen, you are so right, we are becoming more and more aware of the curative and beneficial properties of many foods and the harmful effects of some others.

And Lester, I guess with you it's a matter of preaching to the converted.
