Classical Music - the key to civilization.
March 24th 2008 22:17
“Classical music is one of the cornerstones of Western civilization,”says Lillian Shelton who hasn’t been afraid of making changes in the Secrest Artists Series at Wake Forest University.
Shelton said. “Wake Forest believes that classical music is a part of educating the whole person in the liberal arts. It’s part of the fabric of our culture.”
“The time has gone when we can assume that a Wake Forest student, or any student, has a familiarity with the masterpieces of our Western civilization,” Shelton said.
“It’s beautiful music,” she said. “It engages the brain and the heart. I’m not interested in presenting ear or eye candy. I want to present something that’s accessible but substantive.”
Shelton also plugs the fact that the series is free to WFU students. But she dismisses the idea that people don’t value what’s free.
“I think it’s just the opposite,” she said. “The fact that it’s free reveals how highly valued this program is, how highly Wake Forest values it.”
If a Secrest concert sells out at Brendle Recital Hall, which seats 550 people, Shelton said she will see about 200 students walk through the door.

So if you want to help your mind and brain may I suggest that you concentrate on classical music a bit more.
Close your eyes and you will FEEL the effects in your brain.
Brain expansion is what it is all about, not just staying with the status quo.

Small Thoughts on Big Questions
Now, I'm a rock/metal/progressive guy first and foremost. But sometimes only a Beethoven symphony or a sonata by Shostakovich will do. In the right setting, nothing is quite as beautiful or powerful as a great classical piece.
Good post.

It draws on and provides inner brain strength and feeling, you get a certain sensation while you are listening.
The dignity of man is thus preserved.
